Throughout my experience photographing the Amish I have been fortunate enough to befriend and learn about the Amish in my local context. Amish in Indiana are considered to be Old Order, meaning that they are less likely to adapt to modern conveniences and they retain traditions from hundreds of years ago. Their simplicity does not reflect a lack of knowledge of the world around them; rather, commitment to their traditions is a reminder of values and ethics since lost in modern culture. Their steadfast dedication to their values and principles are unwavering ideals that their children quickly learn and to which they conform. They are also known for their excellent work ethic and skilled craftsmanship.

Through my conversations and interactions with Amish families I have learned that Amish are not only committed to their own communties but are also a caring and compassionate people whose love and empathy reach beyond their own communities. Choosing to have limited contact with the world does not mean that they are not interested in the world; rather, they do not want to lose their chosen values and lifestyles. Inquisitive and interested are common underlying themes in conversations with the Amish as we explore each other’s worlds and experiences.

Amish live in a world based in tradition and resistance to the ways of modern society, yet there are ways in which society has infiltrated their communities. Reliance on motor transportation driven by the “English” and their power tools running on diesel are a few of the paradoxes that exist in the community. If you have work done on your home, you may have a row of cell phones being charged by the Amish. Taking photographs of the Amish is discouraged, but owning photographs is quite accepted.

Capturing this simple, yet profound existence has become a passion of mine each time I am in the States. Sharing their ‘story’ through my lens is satisfying in its own right.
